~Renaming a volume group

1.)boot into rescue mode

2.) edit fstab and grub.conf to new VG name

3.)exit and boot into rescue mode. When prompted to select 'Continue', Read-Only' or 'Skip' choose skip

4.) type’ lvm vgrename /dev/mapper/OLDVG /dev/mapper/NEWVG’

5.)exit and boot into rescue mode

6.) chroot /mnt/sysimage

7.) rebuild ramdisk (follow these steps):


Rebuild ramdisk automatically:


mkinitrd –v –f /boot/initrd-2.6.18-164.11.1.el5.img  2.6.18-164.11.1.el5

Rebuild ramdisk manually if storage attached on SAN (add the boot lun’s  uuid to init):

mkdir /boot/mnt

cd /boot/mnt

zcat ../initrd-2.6.18-164.11.1.el5.img |cpio -iv

vi init (make the change)

find . -print |cpio -ocv |gzip > /boot/initrd-2.6.18-164.11.1.el5.img

8.) vgchange –ay NEWVG
